My Thoughts: Top 10 Albums

What are my favorite albums? Well! I'm so glad you asked!

Ever since I wrote the blog post about vinyl, I've wanted to do a blog post on my top 10 favorite albums. The difficulty for me has always been to narrow it down to ten albums that I really, really, really enjoy. There are so many albums and artists that I love to listen to, but to narrow it down? That's really where the difficulty is for me. I can very quickly narrow down my top artists, but albums... that takes a bit more thought. But alas, I will give it a try today.

If you've been following this blog, it will be no secret to you what my favorite album is, however for those of you interested (I hope you are if you are reading this blog), here it goes...

My top 10 favorite albums:

10. TobyMac - "Eye On It"

If you were to turn the clocks back and rewind to three years ago, this artist and album on his own would have never made a list of musicians and artists that I enjoy (definitely when he was in dc Talk though). This album blew away all of my expectations when I listened to it from the first time. TobyMac has stepped it up so much with this album; so much so that I honestly can not compare any of his previous albums to this. Songs like "Eye On It," "Speak Life," "Steal My Show," and "Me Without You," are well written and well executed, definitely cementing a spot in my top 10 albums.

9. Anberlin - "Cities"

Anberlin has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. I love each album that they put out, but this one is by far my favorite. My brother and I have debated on favorite Anberlin albums for a while now (his favorite is "Never Take Friendship Personal"), but for me, "Cities" was so different than their earlier albums and still stands out for me to this day. If I had to change this pick, I would definitely choose their latest album, "Vital," which is another album by them that stands out to me musically and lyrically.

8. Close Your Eyes - "Line in the Sand"

Honestly, this was the most difficult pick for me on this entire list. I'm a huge Close Your Eyes fan, and for those of you who may not know much about them, there has been a huge stylistic difference between their previous vocalist, Shane Raymond, and their current one, Sam Robinson. Despite the massive difference in vocals (which I feel is a huge improvement), they have also shifted (positively) so much musically. Listening to the singles, "Frame and Glass" and "Kings of John Payne," one would marvel that this is the same band that released "Song For The Broken" and "Valleys." All of their albums are great, but this one is definitely the one that stands out now for me.

7. MxPx - "Secret Weapon"

The first MxPx album that I purchased when it first came out, "Secret Weapon" is solid. On this album, MxPx goes all over the place, from some of the heavier punk to the lighter pop-punk. A couple of songs aren't my favorites, but it definitely is worth a listen to if you haven't checked it out.

6. Underoath - "They're Only Chasing Safety"

This album was the first heavy album that I got into. In one of my previous blogs (You can check it out here), I went into the real significance this had for me as a student in Middle School, and man, this album is the real deal. Songs like "Reinventing Your Exit" and "A Boy Brushed..." are hard but catchy, and very well done. My only wish is that they did one more album similar to this style...

5. dc Talk - "Jesus Freak"

If I had to list my top five bands, dc Talk would 100% make the list. It's a difficult choice narrowing down a top pick from "Free at Last" to "Supernatural," but I feel that "Jesus Freak" really is the one. The group, which is now broken up, was made up of three artists currently in three popular Christian bands (TobyMac, Michael Tait - Newsboys, and Kevin Max - Audio Adrenaline). Great songs, great music, and great artists. This is the dc Talk album to check out.

4. Yellowcard - "Ocean Avenue"

This album was one that I listened to a lot when I was younger and has resurfaced for me because of going to the 10th Anniversary tour for it. I'm not too crazy about the singles anymore, but as a whole it's always a great album to put on when I'm not feeling the greatest or just need a pick-me-up. "Believe" and "View From Heaven" are definitely up there on my list.

3. The Almost - "Southern Weather"

I almost put this album as number two but I think that I like the songs on the next one just a little bit more. Aaron Gillespie performed and destroyed every instrument on this album, making this one not only a standout album, but one that would break him out of the independent field and into the mainstream. This album is one that I don't have to hype up. Listen to it, and you'll see for sure.

2. MxPx - "Life in General"

When people ask me to recommend them a MxPx album, this is the one for sure. This is the album that put MxPx in the limelight. Songs like "Doing Time," "Move to Bremerton," and "My Mom Still Cleans My Room" I just can't get enough of. I can listen to this album over and over again, and it never gets old.

1. The Ataris - "So Long, Astoria"

People don't understand it, but this by far is my favorite album (as I've mentioned on the blog here). I relate to the lyrics, I love the music, and I have so many great memories when I listen to it. If you can't get into it, that's ok, but this is another example of an album that I can listen to over and over again, and it just doesn't get old. Favorite songs on this album are probably the first three songs, "So Long, Astoria," "Takeoffs and Landings," and "In This Diary." Check it out!

Well, that's that.

As I go over it again, I question the position that I placed them in, but I'm pretty sure that I narrowed it down well. Now I'm going to move away from this and get back to the laundry! Thank you so much for reading! I would love to hear your thoughts on top albums and your favorite music! As usual, feel free to drop me a comment here on the blog or drop me a line on Facebook/Twitter: @solidschultz! God bless!
