Today in driving home, I've just really thought about trees.
When I think of trees, all sorts of things come to the front of my mind from beauty and size, to productivity and shade. Trees are magnificent and so unique; the fact that they are alive is so incredible for sure. And yet after driving back from a family luncheon at my in-laws this afternoon, I recognized that when I went through all the characteristics that distinguish trees, the fact that they are alive and give life was one of the last things.
Let's think about that for a second. Without trees and the oxygen that they give off, we would be unable to breath air necessary for survival here on planet Earth. Without oxygen, we as the human race would be unable to exist.
I currently live in South Jersey and there are a lot of trees around the area that I live. As a child, growing up in New York/Pennsylvania, I also lived around trees and knew just how important and just how valuable they are. I loved climbing trees and swinging around on branches; I loved sitting on a hot summer day under the branches, getting a bit of a break from being out in the sun. I always thought trees were fascinating and just thinking about trees today, I am reminded how serious my belief in a God who created all living things.
Looking at the different features from the roots that dig so deep into the earth and bring nourishment to the tree, the concept of photosynthesis and light being converted into life, and especially as I briefly stated a second ago the craziness of trees producing life for us all through the oxygen they create. It can't be by chance. God created this whole system to keep life as we know it able to continue on day by day.
There's so much there than to be by chance.
Scripture states: "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him" (Colossians 1:15, 16 NIV). I think this is huge and is an additional reminder of how intentional of this is.
We were not created by accident. None of this is by chance.
You and I were created in the image of the invisible God, who is the designer of all that is around us. The creator of the trees, the mountains, the rivers, the land, and the sea; the one who created all of this also created humanity.
Trees are important and essential to our survival as a species. They are magnificent and yet, we need to keep the focus on the creator. Our focus needs to be kept on the one who created them and who created us.
Let us be reminded of this; the next time you are driving in the car and look out the window. Look at the trees and be reminded that they are examples of some of the workmanship of the master builder; The Lord of all.
