The Success of Ant-Man

What an incredible summer that it's been at the movies! So far this summer, we've seen four films ("Jurassic World," "Furious 7," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Minions") all blow right past the $1 billion dollar mark worldwide. Let me restate that; four films released this summer have grossed over $1 billion dollars. To better understand the significance of that statement, throughout the entire year of 2014 there was only one film to reach that level ("Transformers: Age of Extinction"), and in the full calendar year 2013 there were only two ("Frozen" and "Iron Man 3"), both released by Walt Disney Pictures.

If you would have asked me at the beginning of the summer what films I would have said had the potential to pass that $1 billion dollar milestone, I don't think that I would have picked all of those films for sure and we're only in October (there is still two months for films to hit that level). It goes to show you the importance of the international box office, especially when looking at smaller films that may or may not have the potential of having sequels or becoming franchises.

One of the most interesting films in my opinion released this summer is Ant-Man, which is the twelfth installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a film series based on characters from the Marvel comic books. Ant-Man, by many accounts, is a massive success for Marvel Studios, and yet many journalists disagree with that statement.

Let's take a brief look at the background of the character:

1) Ant-Man is Scott Lang, "armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength... (he) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats" (Ant-Man official website).

2) The Ant-Man character as Scott Lang has been in the comic books since 1979, with Marvel Premiere #47-48, and has been connected frequently with the Avengers (Marvel.com).

3) When it comes to the Marvel Universe, if the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man over the years have been referred to as "A list characters," and Thor and Iron Man have been referred to as "B list characters," it is safe to say that many would possibly refer to the Ant-Man character as a "C list character."

Again, that is a really brief background when it comes to the character but I feel that even though it was that short it shows you some of the obstacles that Marvel was facing when they announced a big-budget adaptation of what many would list as a character not worth the time. I do have to add that the film did not come close to that massive goal that I listed before of being a $1 billion dollar film and yet I firmly believe that the Ant-Man film is a tremendous success.

Here are four reasons why Ant-Man is indeed a success:

1) Ant-Man is the tenth highest grossing film worldwide in 2015, with a worldwide gross of over $454 million dollars (Boxofficemojo.com).

2) The popular movie reviewing website, Rotten Tomatoes, has given the Ant-Man film an astounding 80 percent (out of 100) on their Tomatometer! Comparatively, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" has a 74%, "Thor: The Dark World" has a 66%, and "Iron Man 3" has a 79% (just listing some of the more popular Marvel films over the last few years) (Rotten Tomatoes: Ant-Man).

3) Ant-Man is the seventeenth highest grossing Marvel Comics film. It has beaten at the box office "Thor," "Captain America: The First Avenger," the entire "Blade" franchise, the entire "Fantastic Four" franchise, both "Hulk" films, and the "Ghost Rider" films. This week's box office will have the Ant-Man film outgrossing six of the seven films in the "X-Men" film series (Marvel Comics at the Box Office).

4) This year alone, the Ant-Man film has outgrossed the next installments of the following iconic franchises:

- "Terminator"
- "Mad Max"
- "Taken"
- "Divergent"
- "SpongeBob SquarePants"
- "Maze Runner"
- "Fantastic Four" (another Marvel property)... and more!

With all this said and brought out, I was excited to hear that because of the success of the Ant-Man film, Marvel Studios has officially announced a sequel entitled, "Ant-Man and the Wasp," which will be released on July 6th, 2018.
